2009 concludes with a last blast to Aberdeen
in search of good roads and cold Stella. |
|
With my tan from Motoeuro
2009 well and truly gone, kids back to school,
leaves turning brown and bloody Christmas
cards in Tesco already, it's time to get that
last overnighter sorted before the weather
really hits the fan. 19th September, Geordie
and Dave make an 11th hour decision head off
to Aberdeen. Geordie pulls a stunner as we
score with £180+ hotel room for the
night for £50, marvellous. Smokes, back
pack, optimistic sunglasses and we're off. |

The
ride in to Scotland is familiar territory; A696,
A68 and the wonderful A7 (wet in parts) to the
Edinburgh ring road and over the Forth Road
Bridge. We take the A92 through Glenrothes towards
Newport to see Motoeuro John and family (who's
been bike-less for far too long). He's up for
a quick blast on the Triumph and returns with
a big grin, I'm hoping this injection of biking
will bring him back to the dark side once more.....
After cakes and coffee we're away past Perth
to join the A93; We've ridden parts of the A93
before in 2005. This road is truly stunning;
every kind of corner you want is here and to
add even more appeal, there's great views of
Glenshee (a ski resort in winter) you can sit
back and soak it up - we opt for something a
little more 'enthusiastic'. Our bikes were built
for this, lots of leaning into corners and howling
out along those short straights. Repeat this
until you can't take any more. We stop at Breamer
for chips and coffee, (we
notice this dedication) then ride the last
section to Aberdeen which is just as entertaining,
those dry roads are just fabulous. On arrival
at our posh hotel we take Stella refreshments
in the bar, it's been one hell of a ride here
so we force another cheeky Stella down before
sleeps. That last beer was enough to wake me
at 4am, I wander off to the loo lighting the
way with my mobile that ends up looking at me
from the bottom of the toilet. Arse. |
Cunningly,
we don't pay the extortionate £12.50 each
for breaky, Geordie's noticed a Macro over the
road, we enjoy a full English (or is that a
full Scottish?) with coffee for £6 the
lot. Happy days.
There isn't a cloud in the sky this morning,
the bright sunshine is good news. We've both
enjoyed the A93 so much, we decide to ride it
back again even though we have an alternative,
it's too good to miss. And a damn fine job we
did ride it back, it works even better the other
way :) There is a god after all.
We chat to other bikers at Breamer and head
back to Perth, we're both lapping up these fine,
fine biking roads. Geordie's got some alternative
roads back, which we've not been on and turn
out to be tip-top, but all too soon and we're
at Peebles. We stop for fuel and both admit
we're goosed. This route has sapped most of
our energy, but we still carry on with spirit
to Galashiels, over to Jedburgh and then the
A68 and A696 back to Northumberland. What a
blast this weekend has been, 598 miles, tyres
taken to the edge on dry, sweet, twisty roads.
We'll definitely be back, but next time with
the rest of Motoeuro and a spare mobile. Ta,
tar. |
